How to setup a FST Timer

SunEase 2000 can support up to 64 tanning beds. When a tanning session is used the minutes to tan can be automatically sent to a remote timer. The Tanning Bed Monitor is the program that actually talks to a remote timer.

The version of the Tanning Bed Monitor that supports our FST Timers is included with SunEase 2000. It keeps track of who's tanning, how much time is remaining and which beds need cleaning.  The Tanning Bed Monitor must be running and is started automatically when SunEase 2000 is started.

1)  Connect the null modem cable from the FST Timer to the computer

The cable required to connect a FST Timer to your computer is a standard Null Modem serial cable.  It may also be called a Laplink Cable or File Transfer Cable at some stores.

You will need a female DB9 to female DB9 or a female DB9 to female DB25 cable.  It is better not to use any adapters.  The computer's 9 pin serial port is typically Serial Port 1 or COM1.  The computer's 25 pin serial port is typically Serial Port 2 or COM2.

The correct cable is available directly from your distributor, F.S.T. Company or most computer stores.

2)  Run the Find FST Timer feature

This feature will determine the serial port the timer is connected to and verify the FST Timer, null modem cable and computer are working correctly.  It checks the status of various stations on the timer for each serial port.  When the Timer is found it will tell you the Serial Port, Station number found and its status.

  • Pause the Tanning Bed Monitor
  • Close any open windows in SunEase 2000
  • Select Utilities then Remote Timer
  • Select Find FST Timer
    • Select the Find Timer button.
    • Note the Serial Port when the Timer is located

In the event no Timer is located, double check the cable connections, restart the computer, turn the FST Timer off then turn it on again.  Contact Technical Support for additional help.

3)  Tell SunEase a Timer is connected
  • Pause the Tanning Bed Monitor
  • Close any open windows in SunEase 2000
  • Select File then Preferences
  • Select the Client/Tanning tab
    • Check Activate Remote Timer Features
    • It will also display (FST Timer Support)
If it does not, reinstall SunEase 2000
  • Close the Preferences window
  • Select Utilities then Purge Data Files then Timer Commands
  • Select the Start button
  • Select the Close button when it finishes
4)  Setup each tanning bed to use the Timer
  • Pause the Tanning Bed Monitor
  • Close any open windows in SunEase 2000
  • Select File then Tanning Beds
  • Highlight the first bed in the list
  • Select View then Form
  • Select the General tab
  • Update the Undress, Maximum and Normal times as needed
  • Select the Timer Setup tab
  • Update the Station Number (the position on the FST Timer this bed will control)
  • Update the Serial Port (see step 2), this number must be the same for each bed connected to the Timer
  • For Connected to an FST 1000?, check this box only if this bed will control a FST 1000 Single Station Timer.
  • Select the Program Timer button.  This will program the FST Timer to match the computer settings.
  • Move to the next tanning bed and repeat these steps.

Note:  SunEase sets up 8 beds when it is first installed, use the Insert icon on the tool bar to setup additional beds.  Use the Delete icon to make any beds you do not need inactive.

5)  Tan your clients normally
  • Make sure the Tanning Bed Monitor is running and it is not Paused
  • Open the Tanning and Sales window in SunEase 2000
  • Locate a client
  • Select the Tan button

The command to set time on the FST Timer will be sent to the Tanning Bed Monitor automatically.  This program refreshes every 20 seconds, so the time will show up on the Timer in no more than 20 seconds.  This setting can be adjusted by selecting the Options button on the Tanning Bed Monitor.
